Compeer Chautauqua

Mental wellness starts with friendship. Compeer matches caring, trained volunteers one-to-one with adults and youth working toward better mental health.

How it works

A mental health professional refers an adult or young person to Compeer. We match them with a screened, trained volunteer based on mutual preferences and interests — and a friendship begins. Therapists consider the Compeer relationship a supplement to therapy; we consider it the point.

Volunteers commit four hours a month for at least a year. Coffee, walks, a card game, a phone call — the simple things, done consistently.

Ways to take part

  • One-to-one adult friendship match
  • Youth mentoring match
  • Compeer Calling — friendly weekly phone calls
  • Monthly groups and special events
  • Advisory board and events committee
  • Monetary donations — always appreciated

Who needs Compeer?

Friends in the community who would like to be matched — people like:

  • A 70-year-old who enjoys playing cards and socializing
  • A 60-year-old who loves reading and Scrabble
  • A 35-year-old who wants to experience community events
  • A 24-year-old who’d like company on walks, or just someone to talk to
“I have met a lot of kind people over the years, but my Compeer friend is the best friend I have ever had. My friend calls me every week to see how I am doing — I have someone there for me when I need him to be.”
