Residence Counselors

Rehabilitation Counselor

The role

Provides case management, rehabilitative, and restorative services to residents within our residential rehabilitation programs.

Duties

  • Provides case management within our AWARDS tool
  • Monitors residents' daily activities to ensure a safe and equitable environment
  • Teaches and coaches residents on the skills, abilities, and confidence required to live more independently
  • Medication administration
  • Assists residents with managing their medical and therapy appointments
  • Maintains cleanliness of the residence

Minimum qualifications

  • BS or AS degree in a Human Services field of study, OR HS diploma with 5 years of human services work experience
  • Knowledge of current issues and concerns of people with mental illness, rehabilitative training methods, and community resources

Other

  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record; may be required to use a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed for site-to-site travel)
  • Criminal background check approved by NYS Office of Mental Health during onboarding
Associate Rehabilitation Counselor

The role

Supportive Housing Counselor

The role

Provides mobile case management and housing stabilization services to individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness, including those experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Operating under a Housing First framework, the counselor helps participants find and secure housing, maintain independent living, develop life skills, and connect with their community. Significant community travel and independent fieldwork.

Duties

  • Housing search and placement; regular home visits; landlord relations and tenancy preservation
  • Person-centered service plans; care coordination with providers; help securing benefits (SSI/SSDI, SNAP, Medicaid, vouchers)
  • Life skills and financial literacy training, side by side
  • Community integration and rebuilding natural supports
  • Crisis intervention using trauma-informed, harm-reduction approaches
  • Documentation in the agency's electronic health record

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field; or Associate degree with 3 years' experience; or HS diploma with 5 years' experience in human services
  • Experience with documentation; working knowledge of mental health issues, rehabilitative methods, and community resources

Other

  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record; daily travel to properties and community locations
  • Criminal background check approved by NYS Office of Mental Health

Program & Residence Managers

Residential Manager

The role

Responsible for supervising counselors and staff and overseeing service implementation within our residential rehabilitation programs.

Duties

  • Provides rehabilitative and restorative services to residents; case management with the AWARDS tool
  • Monitors residents' daily activities to ensure a safe and equitable environment
  • Teaches and coaches residents toward more independent living
  • Medication management and supervision
  • Assists residents with medical and therapy appointments; maintains cleanliness of the residence

Minimum qualifications

  • BA or BS degree in Human Services or a related field
  • Minimum 1 year of practical experience with individuals with mental illness, substance abuse, or vulnerable populations
  • Good knowledge of day-to-day operations of a supervised community residence

  • Criminal background check approved by NYS Office of Mental Health during onboarding
Assistant Residential Manager

The role

Assists the Residential Manager in the day-to-day operations of our residential rehabilitation programs, including supervision of program staff and service implementation.

Duties

  • Monitors residents' daily activities to ensure a safe and equitable environment
  • Teaches and coaches residents toward more independent living
  • Medication management and supervision

  • 2 years of experience in a human services capacity
  • Working knowledge of issues facing people with mental illness, rehabilitative methods, and community resources

Compeer Program Manager

The role

Leads the Compeer program — a non-clinical mental wellness initiative that promotes positive mental health through meaningful friendships. Oversees service delivery, volunteer engagement, participant support, community partnerships, and program administration.

Duties

  • Oversee day-to-day operations; participant intake, screening, orientation, and check-ins
  • Recruit, screen, train, and support volunteers; make and monitor matches
  • Build community partnerships and referral relationships; outreach presentations
  • Support fundraising, including the annual golf tournament
  • Maintain records, track outcomes, prepare reports; contribute to budgeting and planning

Qualifications

  • Minimum Associate degree in social work, psychology, human services, nonprofit management, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 3+ years in human services, mental health support, volunteer coordination, or community programming
  • Strong communication and public speaking; proficiency with data tracking and Microsoft Office/Google Workspace

Other

  • Office plus community-based work, with occasional evening/weekend events; reliable transportation required
  • Background checks required

Caseworkers

Client Caseworker

The role

Assesses the bio-psycho-social needs of potential clients to determine the appropriate level of housing and support, coordinates housing admissions with clients and program managers, and engages with the community to introduce and promote STEL services.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field with 1 year of experience; or Associate degree with 3 years; or HS diploma with 5 years in human services
  • Understanding of mental health diagnoses, signs/symptoms, and evidence-based treatment — and how mental health connects to housing, physical health, finances, and family life
  • Comprehensive interviewing and assessment skills; advanced communication skills

Other

  • Ability to travel among facilities (stairs only in some buildings); valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • Criminal background check approved by NYS Office of Mental Health

Employment Specialists

Vocational Specialist

The role

Provides direct, person-centered support to individuals who have experienced mental health issues to help them identify, secure, and maintain competitive employment — with extended services to overcome barriers and achieve long-term job stability.

Duties

  • Community-based support matched to each individual's needs; regular contact to sustain employment
  • Strategies to overcome barriers; reasonable accommodations with employers; rapid re-employment support
  • Help navigating benefits and work incentives
  • Vocational assessments, individualized employment plans, and progress notes per OMH standards; NYESS reporting

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, human services, or related field (Associate degree with 2+ years of relevant experience may be considered)
  • 1–2 years in human services, vocational coaching, or working with individuals with disabilities
  • Belief in the "Employment First" philosophy; strong relationship-building skills

Other

  • Community-based position with frequent travel; valid driver's license and reliable vehicle required
  • Background checks required

Property & Maintenance

Maintenance Manager

The role

Oversees the safety, functionality, and overall condition of STEL's residential and administrative properties — performing maintenance, preventative tasks, repairs, and emergency response while supervising a team of technicians.

Duties

  • Routine maintenance: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC filters, general repairs
  • Building inspections for safety, maintenance needs, and code compliance; timely work orders
  • Preventative maintenance and long-term improvement recommendations
  • Primary emergency phone holder — responds to and triages incidents during and after business hours
  • Lawn care, snow removal, and exterior upkeep; maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or equivalent; minimum 5 years in general maintenance, facilities, or a related trade; 1+ year in residential or property management
  • Intermediate knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and building systems
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation; able to lift 50+ pounds and climb ladders
  • Preferred: trade certifications (HVAC, electrical, plumbing); familiarity with work order systems
Maintenance Technician

The role

Supports the safety, functionality, and condition of STEL's properties — routine maintenance, preventative tasks, repairs, and emergency response, working under the direction of the Maintenance Manager.

Duties

  • Routine maintenance: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC filters, general repairs
  • Building inspections; accurate and timely work orders
  • Preventative maintenance; urgent response during business hours, with willingness to assist after hours
  • Lawn care, snow removal, and exterior upkeep; maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or equivalent; minimum 1 year in general maintenance, facilities, or a related trade
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and building systems
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation; able to lift 50+ pounds and climb ladders
  • Preferred: residential/property management experience; trade certifications; work order systems
Housekeeper

The role

Maintains a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for staff and residents in a mental healthcare facility.

Duties

  • Cleanliness and sanitation of facilities, common areas, bathrooms, kitchens, and offices
  • Routine cleaning: dusting, vacuuming, mopping, laundry, waste disposal
  • Health, safety, and infection control standards; supply restocking
  • Respectful, compassionate interaction with residents in a recovery-oriented environment

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old with HS diploma or equivalent
  • Previous housekeeping experience preferred, ideally in healthcare or residential settings
  • Ability to lift 25–50 pounds and perform physical tasks for extended periods
